About the Podcast

Sanctuary in the Jungle

is a legal podcast exploring the vital role criminal defense attorneys play in our justice system. Drawing on insights from renowned attorneys Edward Bennett Williams and Michael Tigar, the podcast likens criminal courts to a sanctuary for rational decision-making amidst our jungle-like world where emotion and intuition often drive judgment and vengeance. Within the courts, our decisions should use empathy and unconditional regard. Decisions should be grounded in evidence and guided by enduring constitutional principles: the presumption of innocence, the right to counsel, the right to a jury trial, and the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

Defense attorneys safeguard these fair practices, upholding justice not only through legal process but through a deep recognition of human dignity. Through candid conversations with defense attorneys and advocates, Sanctuary in the Jungle reveals the emotional realities of defense attorneys' work while reaffirming the values of justice, fairness, and humanity at the heart of the legal system.

Our sanctuary

Sanctuary in the Jungle is housed in the historic Hudson Public Library, built in 1903 as a Carnegie library. Our library also hosts the Nelson Defense Group law firm. The building stands as a lasting symbol of knowledge and community. Its preserved architecture and rich legacy inspire our conversations, reminding us of our roots in learning, advocacy, and justice.

In front of our library hangs a lantern, a symbol of enlightenment hung outside many Carnegie Libraries. In the spirit of making this library a sanctuary for reason in the courts and community amongst defenders, we have made this lantern our guiding light.

“A library is a sanctuary that welcomes all, where individuals from different walks of life can come together, united by their shared love for wisdom and learning.” - Susan Orleans
